Bexar County jailers relocated 64 male inmates after roughly half of them were bitten by bed bugs, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Tuesday, jail staff discovered that 30 inmates in Unit 4C had bug bites. All inmates in the unit were moved from the annex to the south tower, the newly constructed portion of the jail.

Mattresses in the unit were treated by pest control and discarded, while clothing and linens were washed.

Pest control began treating the unit Tuesday, and is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

The final cost of the treatment will be determined when the process is complete, according to the sheriff’s office.
